honestly – I entered this simply because the numbers are too cool. Having said that – I really do want to wish each and every one of you a great and healthy body, soul and spirit and, well I have some newsworthy news. The wallops have come to a close (you knew that right?) – but have no fear – that does not mean that the flow of songs have stopped – it simply means there will be a slightly different emphasis as the year 2011 begins to rise and walk. I have been signed to a new jingle agency in New York – more on that will follow. I hope to be spreading my creative wings into some video and animation technologies, along with writing fresh batches of songs – even having a new challenge in mind (kind of like the wallop series – but a bit heartier if you will). I have some interesting projects in the works that require some prolonged focus too, so the timing of the new in terms of year / benchmarks etcetera couldn’t be better. So stay tuned and here is to a wonderful 2011!

Airward still many a one from water springs
In dens and caves wind loving things are nursed:
I lie like unhatched bird, upfolded, dumb,
While all the air is trembling with the hum
Of songs, and beating hearts, and whirring wings,
That call my slumbering life to wake to happy things.

Brueghel prudence 1559

Brueghel prudence 1559

Please click the above image for a larger version….
The original drawing, in the Royal Museum, Brussels, is signed “Brueghel” and dated 1559. This is probably one of the earliest finished Virtues drawings, as it is one of only 7 that included an H in his signature.

Prudence was not to be understood as merely caution or circumspection, it was wisdom, good sense, the ability to distinguish between good and bad and to guide action accordingly. The Latin motto indicates something of the scope and special standing of prudence ” If you wish to be prudent, think always of the future, and weigh all conceivable outcomes (contingencies).” According to Coornhert, prudence was the prerequisite for a good life – that is, a life of goodness. Is there anything more worth mens striving than wisdom?…Wisdom is the sole mistress who can lead men to the right use of wealth, health, life itself, and also the other virtues; for without wisdom, all other virtues are blind. Thanks to wisdom, the wise man knows how to avoid the broad path of sin; it helps him to choose the right , straight way which leads to a virtuous life.

The allegorical figure of prudence stands on, under and next to objects symbolizing various kinds of such wisdom: On her head she carries a sieve (to sift between good and evil), in her hand a mirror (self knowledge), and a coffin – the inevitable death that awaits all men. People prepare for winter, getting food stored, bundling fuel, saving money. The buckets represent the quenching of human passions that can rage and destroy. A man lies sick in bed, preparing his last will and testament, while a doctor tests a fluid, presumably from the dying man. In the lower right corner is a bowl with a spoon standing upright, which is an allusion to a popular Dutch ditty expressive of one’s joy in knowing tomorrow is secure.

prudence VS pride of authorship

it can be a sticky one – when to keep ones stuff to oneself. I have just been listening to a release I did some years ago – made like 5 mix tapes for friends, and moved on. I gave one to Chris from Warner Bros. – asked him what he thought, and he said “interesting”. Nice neutral response eh? I don’t know that it bears being released – I already redid one song ( this strong heart) originally called my heart is beatin. There might be a few bits to either release as is – redo – or even embellish using my current rig. I originally did this on a Tascam TSR-8 1/2 inch tape deck – and wow – what a difference in the tools we have available today. Anyway – one thing I want to do is work on releasing some CDs – and getting my marketing arm up to snuff – but this will take time. I don’t want to suspend my Wednesday Wallop – so I may do something with this…we’ll see…in the meantime – here is the cover (if you look closely you will find yours truly) and track listing;

new music, a cable tv gig, and Texas

I do have a bit of a time crunch happening right now, as we (myself and some family) are planning on going to Texas this week (Friday). I am working on 2 songs for the Weekly Wallop as I will not have access to my studio next week, and I am working on a new gig producing a cable TV jingle and sound bed for an infomercial. I also have a guest coming in to record some songs of his own Wednesday – and my own band is going to practice. Right. You know the old saying – if you want to get something done – give it to the busy guy.

the Olympics and music

olympicsmusic
I was watching the Olympics last night with my daughter and I was struck with the similarities between competing for a medal, and performing and releasing music. Apart from the fact that a gold record and an Olympic gold medal are icons of success, I was thinking more along the lines of the “behind the scenes”…The downhill skier as an example spends their days, weeks, and years perfecting a downhill regime that allows them to better their time. Daily, persistently and, to a large degree anonymously, they train, tweak and work to shave another fraction of a second off of their time. As a musician writing songs, or playing an instrument – there is a lot of old fashioned work involved too. Learning theory, running scales, hours of repetitive practice to better understand a song, or countless listens to a song one tries to complete… I think in the ideal of both scenarios there is a romanticizing. A downhill skier out in the nature, experiencing the thrill of downhill, sun shining, birds chirping, awe inspiring mountain scenes…the musician by their bay window, sitting at the piano, passionately expressing the tongues of angels (or demons as the case may be). Granted – there are truths to both, and the analogy continues. Years go by – the big day arrives, and all is thrown into a few minutes of performance – for which the athlete has striven…do they rise?…are they defeated? How about music – the big record for which thousands are invested is released, does the public care? Is there a tap into the public in the form of a hit? Hit or stiff? Flight or flounder? And then – after time, back to the routine of improving, and, as a Christian musician, celebrating the mere act of creativity as given by a loving God. Too often the “big thing” is seen as the objective – and the process of acquiring it is miserable…I submit – that though the gold is certainly desirable and worth striving for, you had better enjoy the simple act of the process in which you strive ( and this applies to all disciplines artistic or not), because if you don’t – your arrival will only bring a bitter realization that that wasn’t what you really were seeking to begin with. Finally – anytime anyone ventures out of the socially accepted norms of occupation (occupation being defined as how you use your time – much more valuable than money) you need a will of uncommon veracity.
