For what shall it profit a man, if he gain the whole world, and suffer the loss of his soul… Jesus Christ (Mark 8:36)

Hello all, I hope these first days of summer are greeting you with joy and radiance. The next song up is based off of the idea
Jesus highlighted in Luke 8:36… and that is what good is it to have the stuff, the status, the style – but lose your soul? I drilled through to the Greek Lexicon and the got this definition for soul.
I think the song text is fairly self explanatory. I used a mix of live and sampled sounds, myself playing drums, bass, percussion, acoustic guitar, keys and harmonica – with a special shout out to Doug Wamble for the slide guitar work. I had the song done fairly quickly but tweaked it for a long time – and also wanted to do a video… ya’know – I was just having fun. In the video I used a lot of visuals to support “the world” and to be frank – any or all of the items are perfectly fine to have – and are approved by God (in my view) but it is when we replace God with the world – or lose our soul in the process of getting our place in the world that we have the big issue Jesus meant. While I was mixing it we had guests from Europe visiting. One of the guests is a big classical music fan (and fan of very little else), but he described Got No Soul as “Hillbilly music” (some might say this is a derogatory term)… to which I say ” I put the “Hill” in Hillbilly 🙂 > I could care less if someone high brows a style of music – to be honest – I listen to just about anything. So many people miss out on so much in life with preconceived biases. I honestly don’t know if my guest liked this song – I played it for others that did like it very much indeed. I hope you enjoy it as well. As usual I have several formats for your viewing and listening pleasure.

… so this next new song has met with some positive views from within the “inner circle” which believe me is not always the case. Not long ago I was on a cruise and I loved the look of the waves flowing by and thought it would make a cool video. I basically shot the 2 – 3 minutes straight and waited for the opportune song. Lookin happens to be the opportune song. The song is about reminiscing in a way…time flowing by… whispers warehoused in the memory as a shout… you know all that. I wrote the guitar progression in garageband then had Mike Wyatt play the guitar… I did a simple looped drum thing with brushes and then, of course, vocals. The funny thing about the lyric is I wrote the first chorus a loooong time ago – and part of it got smeared from sitting in a pocket… I really liked the part that got smeared but couldn’t for the life of me remember it. Oh well… sometimes I feel like the mad professor misplacing and losing things. Hope you enjoy the latest!

If thou hadst closed my life in seed and husk,

And cast me into soft, warm, damp, dark mould,
All unaware of light come through the dusk,
I yet should feel the split of each shelly fold,
Should feel the growing of my prisoned heart,
And dully dream of being slow unrolled,
And in some other vagueness taking part.

The life that hath not willed itself to be,

Must clasp the life that willed, and be at peace;
Or, like a leaf wind-blown, through chaos flee;
A life-husk into which the demons go,
And work their will, and drive it to and fro;
A thing that neither is, nor yet can cease,
Which uncreation can alone release.

wiping with the shack

As a Christian it is difficult to refute all of the garbage being spewed by the enemy in this world we live in. There is not time or space to list all of the potential folly and distractions the enemy places in front of us at any given time – so prudence would suggest an ignoring to a large degree of the cacophony of potential distractions as they fester around us.. We don’t need to go hunting for arguments or error – it’s everywhere. You might find this a strange intro to a book that is being hailed as a Christian classic – but I am convinced this book – The Shack – is part of a larger initiative by the enemy to confuse, muddle, deceive and prep for more error anybody that would care to read it – especially Christians. While I can name a long list of reasons this book is bad – you might find the comprehensive review by Tim at Challies… DOWNLOAD PDF and while I am not Calvinist as Tim is- he does a great job revealing this book in light of scripture. Tim is a lot more thorough than I would care to be about this book. For the record I believe this books main goal is deconstructing orthodox Christianity. I heard a sermon by the author and he twisted scripture, replaced healing for salvation – and described writing this book for his children under divine guidance (nice abduction murder story for the kids night night time) and emphasized his main reason for writing it was to portray his healing from an adulterous affair he had, hence the going to the shack i.e. – you have to revisit the past to heal – psychobabble. One more point I would like to make is this; I love fiction. I love fantasy and I love story telling. There are a lot of really good books out there I would suggest in place of the shack – especially when one needs edification (it isn’t just taste buds). While the book may not be ideal wiping tissue in your nearest outhouse – winter is coming – and I am pretty sure this will catch a match rather nicely.

…in thy world immense
No look of sky or earth or man or beast;
” In the great hand of God I stand and thence”
Look out on life, his endless, holy feast.
To try to feel is but to court despair,
To dig for a sun within a garden fence;
Who does thy will, O God, he lives upon thy air.
