For what shall it profit a man, if he gain the whole world, and suffer the loss of his soul… Jesus Christ (Mark 8:36)

Hello all, I hope these first days of summer are greeting you with joy and radiance. The next song up is based off of the idea
Jesus highlighted in Luke 8:36… and that is what good is it to have the stuff, the status, the style – but lose your soul? I drilled through to the Greek Lexicon and the got this definition for soul.
I think the song text is fairly self explanatory. I used a mix of live and sampled sounds, myself playing drums, bass, percussion, acoustic guitar, keys and harmonica – with a special shout out to Doug Wamble for the slide guitar work. I had the song done fairly quickly but tweaked it for a long time – and also wanted to do a video… ya’know – I was just having fun. In the video I used a lot of visuals to support “the world” and to be frank – any or all of the items are perfectly fine to have – and are approved by God (in my view) but it is when we replace God with the world – or lose our soul in the process of getting our place in the world that we have the big issue Jesus meant. While I was mixing it we had guests from Europe visiting. One of the guests is a big classical music fan (and fan of very little else), but he described Got No Soul as “Hillbilly music” (some might say this is a derogatory term)… to which I say ” I put the “Hill” in Hillbilly 🙂 > I could care less if someone high brows a style of music – to be honest – I listen to just about anything. So many people miss out on so much in life with preconceived biases. I honestly don’t know if my guest liked this song – I played it for others that did like it very much indeed. I hope you enjoy it as well. As usual I have several formats for your viewing and listening pleasure.

… so this next new song has met with some positive views from within the “inner circle” which believe me is not always the case. Not long ago I was on a cruise and I loved the look of the waves flowing by and thought it would make a cool video. I basically shot the 2 – 3 minutes straight and waited for the opportune song. Lookin happens to be the opportune song. The song is about reminiscing in a way…time flowing by… whispers warehoused in the memory as a shout… you know all that. I wrote the guitar progression in garageband then had Mike Wyatt play the guitar… I did a simple looped drum thing with brushes and then, of course, vocals. The funny thing about the lyric is I wrote the first chorus a loooong time ago – and part of it got smeared from sitting in a pocket… I really liked the part that got smeared but couldn’t for the life of me remember it. Oh well… sometimes I feel like the mad professor misplacing and losing things. Hope you enjoy the latest!

currently I am at 11 songs mastered of 12 possible for the cd. I am in the process of putting together a title and art. I like ‘hopes run high’ as a title, but this and the art are still up in the air. There is a lot going on behind the scenes – kind of like a duck you see gently floating on the water – but underneath the legs are wildly flailing. I am working on 2 new songs – one drum centered called ‘hotbed’ which is a new orleans style thing…and another jazzy styled song without lyrics – which will be a first foray into a pseudo jazzy genre for yours truly. Hope you all are having a great day!

This song has changed quite a bit since inception. Being that I am about to consider this version more or less done – I want to share a little on the background to the song. Some time ago I had a strange dream – where I was tempted to do something, and this temptation was more or less staring me in the eyes with black invitation…and my response (in my dream) was to scream, shout, sing “the joy of the Lord is my strength”…over and over – until my lips and face were tingling. I don’t know if you have ever shouted, sang or yelled very – very hard, as hard as you can for a long time – but that was what I did. And then I woke up to the still of my bedroom. My wife was sound asleep – and not a creature was stirring. I was perplexed. Why in the world would I respond like that? What did it mean? Over the next few days in thinking and praying and weighing it out the thought suddenly occurred to me that indeed the joy of the Lord is my strength. When I have joy in my walk with God I am not as interested in sinful desires. Sin is – in essence – seeking satisfaction and pleasure. When I have satisfaction and pleasure in my walk with God I am better able to defend myself against the lies of the enemy – especially since all sin ends in death and shame – we can better defend against the reality of the temptation. I am ‘strong’ against the enemy. Thomas Aquinas said – and I believe I wrote elsewhere here on the blog – “we are designed for delight, and if we do not get our delight in the proper things (i.e. – our walk with God) we will seek it in carnal pleasures”… the seed for the song joy is that principal. I have really redone a large portion of this song; new drums, new guitar, new (real) horns, new gospel choir and soloists, removed a lot of original instruments, dropped the drum solo (which I may do with a guitar solo in an extended version remix..), enjoy

well I’m on fire – this is true
for the Lord – how about you
I got my reason – and I got no doubt
I got the Holy Spirit – and I’m a gonna shout

King of Kings – Lord of Lords
mercy on me – have mercy Lord
Lord deliver – Lord remake,
gonna celebrate – I’m a gonna celebrate

joy of the lord is my strength – He has become my salvation

well everybody – far and wide
you can run – and you can hide
but you can’t ever get away from this…
the good Lords love – he ain’t ever gonna miss

shining brightly – for all to see
everywhere for you and me
don’t you worry – and don’t you fret
cause you ain’t seen nothing yet

chorus 2X

well bang that drum – play that chord
make a new noise – unto the Lord
wanna praise my King – wanna praise my King
wanna let him know – wanna sing wanna sing
let everybody – have hands collide
gonna put some beats on the floor it’s time

joy of the Lord is my strength He has become my salvation 4x

bonham drums and guitar solo…

ok – so I was reading an interview by Page and Jones and they described the simplicity of their set up on When The Levee Breaks, possibly the most sampled drum beat ever. I took note of their description, went into my basement studio, recorded my drums, used a ribbon and tube mic acoustic mirror (on different levels of 2 story stairway) on sound forge – ran it through a delay, and compressed the works…I decided to add a guitar solo to test my shredding abilities – and really, this is not so much about melodic content as it is about sonic timbre – so here you go…it takes a few reps to gather the steam – and then rolls down accordingly…this one is called ‘hilltop’ .

recording some guide tracks for a new song, also working on joy – which as mentioned earlier has gone in a somewhat new direction. I have a bunch of songs and tunes I am figuring out the best way to approach – especially with licensing looming and aspects of usability needing to enter into the equation. I suppose this is the question anyone who makes anything will have to grapple with…sounds commercial – but it has to be done to a certain degree by anyone who wishes to make an income.

I have a licensing deal…

this is indeed big news for yours truly. It is the first time someone outside of my acquaintances has taken me on, and will lend a hand to get my music heard, placed and generating income. It was a lot of work and sweat (not to mention a 13 page contract), there were several times they might have said ‘no-thanks’ but I passed over each checkpoint, so I am happy to say I am yet another step closer to my goals. I am really very excited, and very thankful, and hope this will be followed by news of where and when you will be able to catch my stuff in this great big wonderful world. Further, I am still tweaking ‘joy’ …this is (as I had mentioned ) a complete redo – but I am making progress. I will also be setting some new audio tidbits for you regular visitors to enjoy in your own productions…more to follow. Have a great day!

I hope you guys that are waiting for drums and production work can stay patient – I am trying to do a number of musical projects in a number of locations – I hope to be getting a few things out in the next day or 2. In the meantime – why not go on over and buy a song a few hundred times? Here is a little sketch named tentatively distant sounds

music, music, music, drumming and songwriting, preparing a band and looking for a name – may have a contest for that if we don’t get somewhere soon. Music and the muse, muso’s and the scene, Virgils in the pews, grass is gettin green, smoke is risin higher, fat is sizzlin hot, people do aspire, and I say why not, inspirations deeper, faith is in supply, gotta rouse the sleeper, blinking rubs his eyes.
